What does "Jōzen" mean?

Here’s the artist’s explanation of the word “Jōzen”:

“Since my artistic direction has evolved to capture the forms of water and create abstract images inspired by them, I sought a name that would reflect this vision. “Jōzen” ("上善") is derived from the Japanese phrase “上善若水” (pronounced jōzen wa mizu no gotoshi), originating from the Tao Te Ching (道德經) by the ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi. This phrase translates to “the highest good is like water.”

In the Tao Te Ching, water symbolises virtues such as humility, adaptability, and quiet strength. Water, both yielding and powerful, takes the shape of any container, flows around obstacles, and nourishes all things while expecting nothing in return. I felt this concept brought a meaningful layer to my work, as my photography seeks to capture these same serene and adaptable qualities of water that Laozi celebrated.

This philosophy aligns naturally with my creative vision, where I strive to convey a sense of tranquillity and resilience in each image, capturing nature’s quiet strength and beauty through abstract forms."

What is the artist's creative process?

The following is the artist's description of her creative process:

"My work begins with nature’s quiet rhythm, waiting patiently to reveal itself. Each photograph emerges from moments of attentive observation—glimpses of beauty that arise unexpectedly, as scenes inspire simply by happening, without need for intervention. This process is about trusting in serendipity and recognising beauty in abstraction, where forms and patterns speak in their own right.

Back at my computer, my approach to editing remains minimal, yet bold and free. I make subtle adjustments, often just a single, decisive crop, to bring focus to what I find most evocative within the frame. My goal is to honour and amplify the natural elements that first captivated me, preserving their essence with as little intervention as possible. This is a process of resonance rather than transformation—an invitation to witness and appreciate what is already present in its purest, abstract form."
